Strange Referrers

Please note that I am editing this post when I have gathered new information

Ok, over the past week or two I’ve had a number of people accessing this blog via cinabeng.co.cc/justin-timberlake-car-accident-today 20 today alone! When you go to this URL it redirects you to http://u.bb/5fs which in the end directs you to http://english.truthway.tv/zakirnaik/index.html which appears to be a website about the Muslim Religion. I search this site and found no reference to this blog so I became confused. Resolved to get to the bottom of this I googled the original link and found Online being… Another persons blog who appears to be having a similar situation. So, I am no closer to finding out why I’m being linked to by a Muslim site under the guise of a Justin Timberlake car crash but at least I’m not the only one?

EDIT:
Ok, I was trying to locate the IP address of this site so I could work on blocking it access, however the bugger has been sneaky. If you visit the website without the page specific (eg http://www.cinabeng.co.cc/) it takes you to the directory of the site, there is no actual page, so it’s not allowing me to ping the site and retrieve a IP address for blocking purposes.

EDIT (9th March 2011):

The same site is now coming through under Cara Nak WordPress Cantik
URL: betofusal.co.cc/cara-nak-wordpress-cantik
Directs you to: http://9.bb/Gso
Ends up at: http://english.truthway.tv/

The same site is now coming through under Aku Sangat Benci WordPress
URL: avelomer.co.cc/aku-sangat-benci-wordpress
Directs you to: ttp://9.bb/Gsr
Ends up at: http://english.truthway.tv/zakirnaik/index.html

I reported the previous bad links I had received to wordpress. They are advising that we report these bad links as they show up. You can report bad referrers at: http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact

EDIT (9th March 2011):

I’ve gone back through my past referrers – turns out as they are reported WordPress is removing them from the referrer list (which is awesome as it fixes up the number of hits you are receiving). So remember to go back through and report!

EDIT (10th March 2011):

Bad Referrers who from the past 24 hrs:

Aku Sangat Benci WordPress (from a previous edit) is still alive and kicking. 15 ‘views’ from it in the past 24 hours.
Cara Nak WordPress Cantik (from a previous edit) is still alive and kicking. 6 ‘views’ from it in the past 24 hours.

Here is another one I missed from earlier this week:

URL: asylum.name/8/4g9se
Directs you to: http://referer.us/Make-Long-URLs-Short.html

referer.us has a spam policy (mentioned on their website) so I am going to contact them regarding this. Below is a copy of what I sent them:

Good Morning,

I’m assuming because it now directs to “http://referer.us/Make-Long-URLs-Short.html” that someone has already reported asylum.name/8/4g9se.

There is currently a problem with blog accounts (my experience is specifically related to wordpress) getting inflated statistics due ‘bad referrers’. These referrers are all using URL shorting / domain fwding to send you onto their sites. The primary sites that are involved in this that I have encountered are discussed on my blog (https://mycrazylogic.wordpress.com/2011/03/04/strange-referrers/). Would it be possible for you to preemptively prevent these sites from establishing short URLs? Is this action possible?

I would appreciate anything you could do to assist with this issue.

Kind Regards,

[Snow White]

I will provide further updates once I receive a response.

EDIT (12th March 2011):

Hi Everyone, I got the following email from the staff at WordPress in response to my numerous messages reporting bad referrers. Thought I’d put it here for your reference:

Hi,
While we cannot stop what is happening outside of wordpress.com we do take this referrer problem seriously and block reported domains from stats. Of course the spammers know we block them and they get another domain.

This is a very hard problem to deal with and based on the last 5 years dealing with spam here is what I think is happening:

1. A spammer finds a lax domain registrar or makes a deal with a less than scrupulous one.
2. Spammer buys a large number of sites
3. They then fill those spam sites with ads or possibly malware or hate content (this hate content is a new tactic)
4. Spammer then spams thousands of websites.
– so far he will have bought the domains using a program and put all the ads on using a program so the effort involved is tiny.
5. Spammer hopes people follow those links back to his site.
– because his costs so far are small it only takes a few purchases through ads to make money. If the site is serving malware then payment per successful infection is made.
6. Spammer then gives the domains back to the registrar within the accepted time-limit and gets a full refund.
– if you buy a domain through wordpress.com you can cancel within 2 days. A dodgy registrar might allow longer but it’s still a short amount of time. That’s why they move fast.
So it’s all profit.

Can we stop it? I’m afraid we can’t simply because it is outside our control. No blog within wordpress.com is doing this.
But we can and do block every domain that gets reported and again thanks for doing so because it helps everyone too.

By the way, please don’t reply to this email with more domains. The fastest way is a new report. Thanks. Oh – and don’t feel the need to write any more than the problem urls as an email with just them will still be checked. It makes reporting them faster too.

Thanks.

Mark

EDIT (16th March 2011):

I just started a blog recently and had the same strange referral connection. And I believe the same number of connections. So, I guess you aren’t alone. I didn’t go to the site directly though.

Yep. Still confused. Glad you’re also confused. I have another confused specimen as well. So we can all be confused together.

  3. March 4, 2011 at 12:09 pm

Hey. Ditto. Except I stick away from clicking strange links like that for fear of malware and such.

And my post that keeps getting Timberlake-car-crashed is about a triple backflip from a 60-foot rope swing… so I’d have to assume there’s no relevance there.

  4. March 4, 2011 at 12:19 pm

I had the same situation happen over on my blog today– 23 referrals– I’m hoping I didn’t just pick up a virus visiting that page!

  5. March 4, 2011 at 12:22 pm

    omg same!
except instead of the Islam page (well I did get that page two days ago) I get redirected to an autofinance site and I’ve already gotten like 20 views from the site alone today…I have no idea where this is all coming from…

  6. March 4, 2011 at 12:35 pm

Ugh! They’re doing it to me too! SO frustrating. You are definitely not alone.

I’ve had 24 views from that link today alone. I was afraid to click on it thinking it may be a site with a virus or something.

    It’s good to know I’m not alone…

  8. March 4, 2011 at 12:52 pm

This happened to my blog today too! I have had a few other weird addresses as well now and again, but none with as many “hits” (21) as the timberlake link. If you find out anything else in relation to this, could you please post what you find?

  9. March 4, 2011 at 12:56 pm

    Same story! So bizarre. That’s how I found you . . . !!

  10. March 4, 2011 at 12:58 pm

Wait–why is this dated March 4??

    Hi MCL,
I’m having the same problem with that link. I tried to follow it also, and I didn’t get anywhere. Please let me know if you figure it out, or get any comments that could shed some light on the situation. I also talked about gasoline prices in my blog yesterday. Maybe there is a connection. I’ll let you know if I find out anything else.
    Thanks,

😉 There is your whois data. It looks like he is redirecting to truthway for some reason I am not sure why and botting wordpress from the co.cc domain.

I have 22 visits from that same place today but when I click it, it takes me to a site about wedding stuff. I’m sure it is something spammy, so I hope I don’t get some nasty virus from clicking the link 😦

    • 17 Libel
      March 4, 2011 at 2:19 pm

You shouldn’t get a virus. I’ve reported the co.cc domain to the providers administration. You are getting something different than what I am; though I am still not entirely sure what he was thinking or what exactly he is trying to do. He should; however, be a bit more careful with his personal information. 😀

What he is doing is using the co.cc domain to redirect to other sites disguised as other posts so that people don’t catch on to the scam/bot program as you are redirected as soon as you hit the “post url”. I’m not sure if it is just a spam bot or something else, but they should take it down in a few days with any luck.

  15. March 4, 2011 at 1:54 pm

I have had the exact same thing happen to me. Apparently there were 20 views to a recent posting of mine via this same website. Odd.

Let’s hope it’s just another form of spam that WordPress can fix, the way Akismet gets rid of unwanted comments. Perhaps WordPress shouldn’t count a referred hit if there’s no relevance, algorithmically measured.

  18. March 4, 2011 at 2:15 pm

oops … Actually, .cc is Australian and .cc is chinese

.cc is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Cocos (Keeling) Islands, an Australian territory

But that really has nothing to do with it as any one can use their service.

And again their is no infection; they are redirecting to valid, but off the wall sites. Me thinks its just away to get around the Askimet and full modded accounts. Reverse spam! I have several others that are go through url shorteners (like bit.ly but not in English) that redirect also.

I haven’t figured out how to find them yet.

I’m just glad it wasn’t for Viagra or pronz.

      • March 4, 2011 at 2:43 pm

Yea, noticed that too. I’m currently looking into IP blocking to see if that will do the trick. Will provide update.

        • 24 Libel
          March 4, 2011 at 2:57 pm

I sent a message to WP support with the link to this; since all the convo is happening here and your the only search coming up in goggle; so all of the traffic pertaining to weird hits will more than likely come here.

I don’t think that there is much more we can do until the site is removed. Either way, WP will need to address it somehow because it is not going to stop with this.

Short URLS are going to be difficult because you can’t find the point of origin and they are commonly used. :/

          • March 10, 2011 at 7:27 am

I am starting to contact some of the sites used to generate the short URLs. If they can be brought on board to prevent this issue then it would help. There are a limited number of actual sites that are showing up through this (3 or 4 different ones that I have encountered). If the short URL providers can block those it would be a big step towards removing this issue.

  19. March 4, 2011 at 2:16 pm

err .cn is Chinese. too much miller lite for one day. 🙂

  21. 29 Evan
    March 4, 2011 at 2:29 pm

I am getting the same thing. I don’t mind seeing the extra traffic! But I have to wonder if my site is actually seeing any real traffic or if it is some sort of bot. My guess is that it is a bot that is crawling hundreds of sites so that the owner of those sites will go to the referrer link and give them hits. Please update again if you find out anything.

  22. March 4, 2011 at 2:36 pm

I’ve had about 40 referrals from cinabeng.co.cc/justin-timberlake-car-accident today. When I clicked on it, it redirected me to a site that gives away iPad2’s. And it seems to not be linked to my main page but rather just one entry that I have. And I just started my blog yesterday (3/3 in America). This is very strange.

    • March 4, 2011 at 11:47 pm

After a few more from the Justin Timberlake Car Accident link, I’m now getting hits through urlenco.de/krei

Awesome, just what I need, yet another strange referral.

  23. March 4, 2011 at 2:49 pm

Hello again. One last piece of information.

co.cc user is using a bot to hit links that were likely harvested off wordpress so when the bot hits begins to move (it has to be a bot because it is 24-7) it hits each link leaving the referral page that is nothing more than a cloak redirect; same with the short URLS:

    http://cloakingking.blogspot.com/2008/06/javascript-re-direct.html

I need sleep! Good night every one!

  25. March 4, 2011 at 3:44 pm

The same thing is happening to me. HOw can you block the websites?

  26. March 4, 2011 at 3:50 pm

I’ve been getting weird shortened URLs on high frequency for the past 10 days or so on my WordPress. This Justin Timberlake one has been bringing about the same amount of hits mentioned by others (20-ish) to my blog for the past couple of days.

Thanks to the people who have reported the issue to WordPress, and to the original author for starting up this impromptu forum, which is at least providing some info and knowledge that it is effecting a lot of sites. Here’s hoping WordPress finds a way to sort this out soon.

  27. March 4, 2011 at 3:58 pm

It’s best not to click on suspicious-sounding referrers. Here’s a blog post that talks about traffic scams that I found really helpful: http://adarnay.wordpress.com/2011/01/29/scams/

I also had bogus “readers” from this fake referrer, so I sympathize! It’s annoying to think that your numbers have gone up, when they haven’t 😦

  28. March 4, 2011 at 4:13 pm

Hmm, me too and I wound up here- 33 referrals from the justin timberlake car crash link from a post on A Retailer’s guide to SEO.

The url went nowhere- hopefully WP have jumped on it already

  29. March 4, 2011 at 4:46 pm

I’ve been getting the same kinds of hits from that same site for the last 3 days, on a post about hell of all things. I’ve not been willing to click the link though, so thanks for tracking this down for us.

I also get more and more hits from shortened links. I NEVER click them, as they are sure to lead to nasty sites (real url-shortened redirects from social media sites just show up as the original site – twitter, facebook, etc, – not the shortened link), but they are getting annoying.

As much as my ego likes the inflated traffic numbers, there’s no point if the hits are not real people.

  30. March 4, 2011 at 4:49 pm

I’ve been “visited” too by 20+ justin-carcrash bothits and other weird shortereners that go nowhere. I figured it was spam and as long as I don’t visit the links I’m home free.

  31. March 4, 2011 at 5:20 pm

Thanks to all of you for this discussion. I’m glad I’m not alone with these multiple, weird referrals.

  32. March 4, 2011 at 5:36 pm

The same thing is happening to me.You are not alone, we are many!

  33. March 4, 2011 at 6:03 pm

I am having the same problem. It is certainly uping my traffic, but annoying. Often when I click I get a link to a.dfly.com. Hope WordPress sorts out soon as well.

  34. March 4, 2011 at 6:24 pm

I just googled that link because it’s not the first weird site giving me referrals – I write about spending a year in Japan so massive confusion – and came across this. Thanks Libel for the explanation!

  35. March 4, 2011 at 8:16 pm

Glad to see I am not the only one. I’m getting both the cinabeng.co.cc/justin-timberlake-car-accident and some weird “ad-fly” site. It’s so disappointing. I thought my blog readership had actually taken off. Hope they can stop it. Wonder what it is intended to do?

I noticed the same thing when I went to my Stats this morning. I thought it was odd (Firefox isn’t letting me through to the site at all, which is probably a good thing) and decided to search the url on Google. I also have one today that’s generated 6 hits so far from urlenco.de/krei which sends me to “TruthwayTV”. Whatever that is, I’m not sure.

It’s odd because my blog obviously has nothing to do with politics or religion. XD I also got a comment that was marked as spam saying basically, “Analyzing your blog has been interesting,” from a poker site. Okay, I suppose it’s interesting to people who most likely have no real interest in the content?

I get the same think, it kept happening for some weeks, but I have a photography blog. And I do mind that that is a muslim site. Isn’t there anything I can do? My blog is linked nowhere on that page, but I still get referals from there.

  48. March 9, 2011 at 7:23 am

Hi Everyone, not show how many people check back on this (or are only notified when a comment is added), I have new bad referrers showing up and have updated the original post to reflect this.

  49. March 10, 2011 at 8:24 pm

Hi, thanks for all the info, I just started going through my referrers and found lots of strange url’s that I don’t want to click on, so googled them and found your site 🙂 I will report the url’s and hopefully they will be blocked soon 🙂

  50. March 11, 2011 at 4:15 am

    Weird. Thanks for the info.

Expressing solidarity to all those who are facing the same issues. I have had 15 views each from two different sites, justin timberlake one included. I think its time wordpress takes some action on it. Please update if any of you found a solution.. Thanks!

Same thing here! Happened a bit last month and has been relentless this past week. Why would they do this?! It’s very annoying.

These strange referrers are inflating our view stats…but what’s the point?

I don’t get why they are linking to unrelated blog posts by a variety of people who have nothing to do with the site. I’m a newbie at blogging – so I’m assuming I missing some crucial point.

    Can someone enlighten me?

It’s interesting to see this point of view. I can’t say fore sure if I agree or not, but it is something I will think about now.

Thanks so much for posting this info. I am new to wordpress and have gotten almost 40 hits from places like this in the last couple of days. I know now what to do with these sites.

It is interesting I have just moved my blog from blogger and I never had any issues like that. Granted the blog I had was only up for a month, but I was getting hits likes this on my 4th or 5th day with wordpress.

I am a programmer and I would think this could be taken care of at that level (they follow a pattern) but I believe wordpress relies on google analytics for there stats. Is that true?

I’ve been getting plenty of traffic from mysterious shortened url links too, such as “tini.cc/d3” – which all redirects to dead pages or newshotlink.net pages that have problem loading.

I’ve got the same thing going on. I started up a WordPress a few days ago after running a semi-successful Tumblr for a while (decided to go more text-format) so I assumed that a large number of views to my site every day (albeit not as large as my Tumblr) was reasonable to expect. Then I started looking at where they came from and it was the same few links every time that changed their destination pages every 24 hours. Weird shit.

I had the same thing going on only after 3 days of my blog creation. So, I’m kind of glad that I’m not alone, but I also feel bad that others are going through this as well. Thanks for putting this together, and I’ve started reporting these links as well. I haven’t had any for almost a week, so I’m glad for that =).

Wow that was strange. I just wrote an extremely long comment but after I clicked submit my comment didn’t appear. Grrrr… well I’m not writing all that over again. Anyway, just wanted to say great blog!

  61. April 28, 2011 at 9:45 am

When I initially commented I clicked the “Notify me when new comments are added” checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get four e-mails with the same comment. Is there any way you can remove people from that service? Bless you!

G’day Zamki, sorry about that! I’ll look through the settings and see if there is a way I can remove it.

      • April 29, 2011 at 5:57 pm

Hey Zamki, I had a look though, the only thing I can see is that there are 13 comment subscriptions to this post. I did find that with my wordpress account I have control over the email subscriptions I have so I think you have to remove the subscription yourself – sorry I couldn’t be more help!

I pretty much reached this post the same way you did, I was getting dodgy referrers and being directed to even more dodgy website.

My referrer was apparently this: tini.cc/jT

Thanks for this post, I’m new to wordpress and at least now I know what to look out for.
